Why Choose DEXA

The Clinical Standard for
Body Composition

DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is recognised worldwide as the most accurate method for measuring body composition. Unlike scales, BIA devices, or skinfold callipers, DEXA provides a detailed, region-by-region analysis of your fat, lean tissue, and bone.

Exceptional Accuracy

Precision of less than 1%, validated against reference laboratory methods.

Regional Mapping

See fat and lean tissue distribution across arms, legs, trunk, and core — not just a single number.

Fast & Comfortable

Scans take approximately 3 minutes. Ultra-low radiation — less than a day's natural exposure.

Track Progress Over Time

Consistent, calibrated results enable meaningful comparison between scans.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is a DEXA scan?
DEXA stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. It uses two low-energy X-ray beams to accurately measure bone, lean tissue, and fat mass throughout your body. It is the gold standard for body composition analysis and bone density measurement worldwide.
Is the scan safe?
Yes, DEXA scanning is very safe. The radiation dose is extremely small — less than one-tenth of a standard chest X-ray, and less than a single day's exposure to natural background radiation.
How long does a scan take?
The scan itself takes approximately 3 minutes. Your full appointment, including consultation and explanation of results, typically runs 20–30 minutes depending on the service.
Can I claim on Medicare?
Bone mineral density testing may be eligible for a Medicare rebate (approximately $99.20) when referred by your doctor. DEXA body composition scans are not rebatable through Medicare. Contact us or your GP for more information.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, casual clothing without any metal components such as zippers, studs, or underwire. Athletic wear is ideal.
How often should I get scanned?
For body composition tracking, we recommend every 8–12 weeks to allow measurable changes to occur. For bone density monitoring, your doctor will advise on the appropriate interval, typically annually or every two years.
